How to clean your wool carpet?

You are now a happy owner of a moroccan wool carpet. Are you wondering how you can clean and maintain your carpet? Les Nomades have some good pieces of advice to help you with that.

Read on!

The maintenance of a wool carpet is essential to keep the original appearance longer, especially the Beni Ouarain type, which is the most delicate fabric. It is important to follow these cleaning tips so you don’t damage your beautiful carpet:

1. A vacuum for regular cleaning:

First thing first, don’t wait till your carpet becomes dirty and stained to clean it. It is very important to vacuum your carpet regularly. The recommended frequency should be once to twice a week. Use a vacuum cleaner with a good but soft brush for thick and fluffy carpets. However, be gentle! Rubbing too had will damage the colors and fibers of the carpet.

2. A deeper manual or steam cleaning:

Once in a while, depending on the state of the carpet, you are allowed to deep clean it using a shampoo. If you have a steam cleaner, then you can use it instead, unless the carpet is made of fine fabrics or natural fibers. While using the steam cleaner, a good tip is to add some few drops of essential oils to the product to make it smell good.

3. Plenty of gentle products to clean with:

For delicate carpets and carpets that are white, it is highly recommended to not use powerful detergents when cleaning. Instead, you have plenty other alternatives such as Savon de Marseille for coffee and sauce stains, warm water and white vinegar for “stubborn” stains, or baking soda and sparkling water for more incrusted stains.

If you have a vintage carpet, the best is to clean it with fresh water and Marseille's soap.

4. No washing machine:

If your washing machine is big enough to wash your carpet, just don’t do it! Berber carpets are handcrafted pieces of art that require gentle cleaning.

To maintain the carpet softness and preserve the longevity of your Berber carpet, do not wash it in a washing machine.

5. Fresh air and sun to dry:

After the wet cleaning, your carpet needs some natural air and sunshine ti dry. Make sure to let it dry on its back in order to not damage the colors. The carpet must be completely dry before it goes back to its place in the house. An improperly dried carpet could quickly become a moth nest and give a bad smell.

Last but not least, if you feel like these cleaning steps are too difficult and demanding for you, just take your carpet to a professional cleaner.
